An update on Gilad Shilat

Gilad Shilat is an Israeli soldier captured by Hamas in 2006 at the age of 19.  He has become an emblem in Israel, a symbol of the danger that Palestinians represent to Israel.  A friend of mine on the birth-right trip to Israel this summer informed my that he saw local newscasts that would end their program with a daily update on Shilat.  Bringing him home would be a huge victory for the Israeli government, more than I think people outside of the country can truly understand, given it is just one person.  Just last year Israel traded 20 female Palestinian prisoners for a video tape of Shilat.  This New York Times article provides an update on Israeli efforts to bring him home.
