Iran gas prices rise, as does traffic

The New York Times reports on Iran’s decision to end gas subsidies and the unexpected result, unfazed buyers.

Government subsidies, which had until now kept the basic price of gasoline at around 38 cents a gallon were drastically cut at midnight on Sunday, quadrupling the rationed fuel price overnight and pushing the “free” price, of which motorists can purchase an unlimited amount, to a staggering, for Iranians, $2.55 a gallon. But Iranians took to the streets as if nothing had changed.

The decision to end the subsidy was based on budget concerns and on checking the large amounts of air pollution in Tehran.
