Gates in Bahrain

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is visiting Bahrain  to engage the kingdom’s king, Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, and its crown prince, Sheik Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa. Unlike similar democratic uprisings in Egypt and Libya, the U.S. has actually backed Bahrain’s rulers, perhaps swayed by its close military ties with the country, given the U.S. Navy’s 5th fleet is stationed there. Lately, an uneasy calm has descended upon Bahrain as the possibility of negotiations between government officials and anti-regime representatives continues to linger. Secretary Gates is expected to push Bahrain’s rulers to enter such negotiations and offer concessions aimed at a lasting resolution.
