Operation Odyssey Dawn Continues

Operation Odyssey Dawn, the code name for the U.S. led-bombing campaign against Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s military, reached its third day amid signs of fracture within the international community. As tomahawk cruise missiles reigned on tanks, anti-aircraft defenses and even a Libyan administration building in Tripoli, international leaders expressed reservations about the intensity, duration and ultimate objectives of the allied campaign. Russian President Vladimir Putin likened the bombings to the crusades while Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa voiced outrage over the reported deaths of civilians from wayward Western bombs. Further, Republicans in the United States – such as House Speaker John Boehner – called for clear directive from the Obama Administration as to the ultimate purpose of the bombing campaign. Indeed, the attack on a Libyan administration building in Tripoli left some wondering if the Allies are intent on targeting Col. Gaddafi himself. However, administration officials were quick to declare that Gaddafi is not a military target, only buildings central to his “command and control” are. This article from the Washington Post provides a succinct overview of current developments as the Civil War in Libya continues to rage.
